Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of many institutions and organizations, serving as one of the most important means of personal and organizational communication. Despite its advantages, organizations face various challenges when employees use social media, such as disruptions to productivity. This study aimed to identify the types of social media used by employees during work and assess their impact on productivity. A systematic literature review approach was adopted. By reviewing and analyzing 37 articles and studies, the research found that social media—which includes platforms such as social networks, messaging apps, email, forums, blogs, wikis, and more—has become a common communication tool for employees to exchange knowledge and collaborate with colleagues within organizations. The analysis of the literature revealed that most primary studies suggest social media use has positive effects on organizational and personal productivity. However, some studies highlight the negative impacts of social media use in the workplace. Notably, many studies fail to establish the actual causality of the factors influencing employee productivity due to their reliance on cross-sectional data. This review contributes to the existing body of literature and serves as a foundation for future research aimed at determining the causal relationships between social media use and employee productivity. Furthermore, this review proposes an intervention model for addressing Internet addiction as a tool to mitigate the adverse effects of social media use on organizational productivity while investigating the underlying causative factors.
